Secunderabad: Senior citizens over 85 and persons with disabilities on Saturday utilized the home voting facility casting two votes — one for the Secunderabad assembly bypoll and the other for the Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituency.
This is considered a unique aspect of the Election Commission of India's new home voting initiative as for the first time in Telangana, voters of an assembly segment cast two votes.
For instance, 92-year-old Yadamma was excited after she cast her two votes in her house at Commissary Bazar in Bowenpally on Saturday. She opted for home voting as she is unable to walk properly. As part of the ongoing home voting facility, special teams visited Yadamma’s house and explained how to cast a vote.
A Ramesh Babu, a technician working in DRDL (a defence organisation) in Kanchanbagh, helped his mother cast her vote. Two separate ballot boxes — one for the Secunderabad Cantonment assembly by-poll and the other for Malkajgiri Parliament Constituency (Cantonment is one of the seven assembly constituencies under this Parliament constituency) — were carried by the special teams to each voter's house to avail the facility.
“She never missed casting her vote in both assembly elections and Parliament constituency elections in her lifespan. Even though she was unable to walk and she would go to the polling booth either in a wheelchair or by an auto to cast her vote. However, this time the officials visited my house to facilitate home voting,” Ramesh Babu, Yadamma's son, excitedly told STOI.
Sangam Raju, a blind voter who runs a grocery shop in Bowenpally, also utilized this facility. “This is a good facility for blind voters like me. I used to skip visiting the polling station due to the non-availability of an attendant to take me to the polling booth. Now, I am happy to cast my vote in my house,” Sangam Raju shared his happy moment.
